As it has proven, that Tauranga is situated quite close too many attractions on New Zealand’s north island, we decided to extend our stay here with Eileen for 2 additional nights. But we had to change the room.

So we moved downstairs and have now our own “studio” with private bathroom … we’re totally happy with it.

If anyone thinks about going to New Zealand’s City of Tauranga, we highly recommend to stay at Eileen’s nice, clean and familiar Bed’n’Breakfast.

Thai Airways hat unsere Standby Tickets akzeptiert. Und somit sind wir am ersten Fixpunkt unserer Reise angekommen.

Nach 10 Stunden Flug in der ausgebuchten Eco-Klasse sind wir zur Mittagszeit in Auckland International Airport (AKL) auf der Nordinsel angekommen. Und eines kann ich schon sagen, es hat sich wirklich gelohnt.

Bei der Ankunft geht man durch eine Art von verziertem Torbogen, untermalt mit Maori-Musik, gespickt mit dem Hinweis, dass man sich in einer Eco-pollution Zone befindet und jegliches organische Gut zu deklarieren hat.

Auf keinen Fall dürfen also Dinge wie frisches oder konserviertes Fleisch oder Fleischprodukte, Milchprodukte, Samen und frische Früchte, mit Erde verschmutzte Schuhe und sonstiges keimfähiges Material mitreingebracht werden. Aktuell gibt’s scheinbar grosse Angst vor der Immigration von Stinkwanzen ( stink bugs); wenn man eine findet, soll man ein Foto machen, dieses an die Behörden übermitteln und das Ding einfangen.

Die Zollbestimmungen sind auch happig, pro Person darf man 50 Zigaretten zollfrei einführen. Zu zweit hatten wir eine Stange (200) mit, somit um 100 zuviel. Für diese überzähligen Tschick konnten wir entweder Zoll zahlen oder gebührenfrei entsorgen lassen. Die Zollabgabe + Steuer für die 100 zusätzlichen wären 115 Neuseeland Dollar gewesen, ca. 66 euro. Somit landete die Hälfte der Stange, die wir zuvor um ca. 35 Euro gekauft hatten, im Müll.

Zum Vergleich: 1 Packerl mit 20 Tschick kostet in Neuseeland 30 Dollars, also ~ 17 euro.

Unseren Mietwagen hatten wir schon von Österreich aus bestellt (über https://www.billiger-mietwagen.de/ ), das klappte immer gut und die waren günstig.

Der lokale Anbieter hier nennt sich Jucy Rentals, der als Auto haben wir einen 3er Mazda gekriegt, Automatik mit sage und schreibe 250000 Kilometern. Klappert ein bisschen, Fahrwerk, Bremsen und Reifen sind aber top.

Kosten für 10 Tage mit insurance und unlimitierte Kilometer : 240 euro

Unsere Unterkunft hatten wir bereits gebucht, somit ging’s nach der Autoübernahme und ein paar Proberunden wegen Linksverkehr auf den Highway Richtung Süden nach Tauranga, ca. 200 km Fahrt. Und da sind wir jetzt mal … ????

Sitting in bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, having an Espresso. Boarding Starts in 90 Minute, as we have standby-tickets we don’t know yet, If we will catch this flight.

We used the asian version (GRAB) of UBER to get from the City Centre to Airport. 400 bhat (~ 12 euro) for 30 minutes Ride.

The food-court at the Airport here is poor, but it fills.

After some late breakfast we spent the afternoon by the pool. As we will stick close to each other the next 3 months, we decided to split up and everyone’s doing his/her’s task.

Shadi went shopping, what else. As the Terminal21 mall is closest to us, she went there. But no “deals” at all as she returned empty handed. Taking care on our budget, thanks beloved wifey 😉

I needed to buy some AUX-cable for the car. For this i went to Pantip Pratunam plaza, the biggest “IT-Mall” in Bangkok. But times changed…

I was impressed by Pantip Pratunam the first time in 2005. Every gadget an IT-nerd could think of. Servers, graphic cards, harddisks, hardware components, cables, battery-packs, pirate copys of latest movie DVD and software all over on 5 floors. The most exotic gadget i’ve seen there was an 32x DVD copy-machine, guess what they needed this for ?

But nowadays the whole mall has a vacancy-rate of ~80% . Seems the PC-market is dead and streaming has succeeded, no one needs piracy-DVDs anymore.

There’s currently running “The Lord of the Rings” in thai TV, such a coincidence. Tomorrow we’re trying to catch the plane to middle-earth …
